Everything about D'angelo's Voodoo suggests that it may be as close to perfect as an album can get; the players, the sound, the recording techniques, the engineer, and the fact that it was made at Electric Lady studios. Warmed up by 2-inch tape, and adorned with a coat of glistening grease, Voodoo is at once a journey into the history of black music, and a true statement by D and his peers that theirs is a new music - something based on traditional sensibilities but defined by hip-hop explorations, and funk/soul soundscapes.
There are so many great tales about the making of Voodoo that it's hard to pick just one. The fact that Spanish Joint was recorded in one take, that Charlie Hunter played the bass and guitar parts on the aforementioned track as well as on The Root at the same time (he plays a custom 8-string and is not of this earth), or the sheer number of harmony parts that D'Angelo put down on his songs (as many as 50 on some) are all insights that make Voodoo an extra-special listen. • • • • • •. This album was recorded during the Soulquarians Sessions (several of the key members shared the astrological sign of Aquarius) when The Roots’ “Things Falls Apart”, Erykah Badu’s “Mama’s Gun”, and Common’s “Like Water for Chocolate” were also being tracked. They would pop in and out of each other’s sessions since many times they’d be in the other studio next door to one another since Electric Lady had more than one recording suite.
